Food: Just Salad, Boxpark

Another health craze has hit Dubai, which hasn’t spared anyone – not even food bloggers! Trying to eat healthy (which also includes the sad reality of skipping dessert) meant crossing Just Salad off the wishlist.

Sadly their blender wasn’t working when I visited, although their selection of teas made up for that – loved the Honest tea range: Honest green lemon as well as the half tea half lemonade combo. They also have Alo ® Drink (aloe vera), Vita Coco, vitamin water and much more.

Started off with a buffalo chicken wrap which may taste a bit bland in the beginning but as soon as the buttermilk ranch kicks in, it pulls the entire sandwich together!

A great combination of chickpeas, crumbled feta, lentils and pita chips with an olive oil balsamic vinegar dressing in the Mediterranean mix (veggie special).
Another great salad is the chipotle cowboy, a chunky salad where the grilled chicken, sharp cheddar and creamy avocado shine through; dressed in a chipotle vinaigrette.

Just salad also has a range of soups and a make your own salad option, if you opt for the reusable bowl you get to add 2 essentials to the salad of your choice.

The Boxpark branch we visited is small but had outdoor seating which was great for this cooler weather! Their other branches are in JLT and Business bay – for when the inevitable sweltering heat comes around!

Food: TRIBECA – slice of NYC in JBR

Since JBR is littered with a plethora of restaurants choosing where to dine tends to become a battlefield. TRIBECA is a new-ish open in JA Ocean View Hotel which offers healthy, fresh and organic options. The menu is color coded with all green items being organic, which is at least two-thirds of the menu!

For drinks we started of with: berrylicious and lychee coconut iced tea. While the former was syrup heavy, the latter was served unsweetened and proved to be refreshing.

Bruschetta sampler: tomato, walnut tapenade and porcini mushroom on toasted quinoa bread. The standout was the walnut tapenade with a subtle smoky flavor spread across the thick crusted bread.

A simplistic looking but delicious watermelon and feta cheese salad from @tribecadubai

Baked organic greek feta with oregano, black pepper + watermelon, a fairly simplistic starter with crumbly, melt in your mouth, well seasoned cheese. Feta worked incredibly well with the bruschetta so order these two dishes together.  Continue reading Food: TRIBECA – slice of NYC in JBR

New restaurant alert: Appetite!

Appetite is a definite hidden gem located inside Bay Avenue serving up delicious guilt free grub – not scrimping on quality or taste Appetite sure delivers on all fronts.

The interiors are quite quirky with wooden tables and steel chairs/stools surrounding the cases storing ‘top notch food’. Their outside bench seating gives a great picnic air and would be amazing for this weather.

Their menu includes daily specials and new additions to the menu like their superfood breakfast bowls.

As for drinks, they have their own range of coffees and juices but what really interested me were their freshly in-house made drinks: summer fiesta and litchi iced tea.

Beetroot avocado quinoa nori from @appetiteuae. Served with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce.

These beetroot, avocado organic quinoa nori rolls are really filling and not to mention delicious. A little hard to eat but worth the mess. Served with wasabi, soy sauce and ginger.

The Asian chicken noodles were another fast favorite, served in a durable take away box – noodles topped with stir fried vegetables and crispy sesame seed chicken.

Moroccan street salad – grilled halloumi, organic quinoa, mixed vegetables drenched in a tangy sumac dressing. This salad needs to be mixed well since the quinoa is at the bottom.

My favorite item out of everything we tried was the turkey and chipotle blt – this was just fantastic. The smoked turkey meets the soft yet flavorful rye bread and juicy tomatoes for a brilliant combination.

Wicked mac n cheese, a great twist on the classic with the addition of tomatoes and basil. Ooey gooey heavy cheesy deliciousness topped with a crunchy layer of parmesan cheese!

This is actually a new creation by the passionate Archie! He’s been experimenting with different ingredients to make the perfect smoothie and I think he hit jackpot. This invention contains: avocado, honey, coconut milk and white oats – needs to be on the menu stat!

Overall a great lunch at a hidden gem! Need more of that fantastic avocado smoothie.

New restaurant alert: Go Gyroz

Go Gyroz is a new Greek open located in Cluster D, JLT. Easy to find, with the bright blue Grecian interiors. The staff is incredibly welcoming and well acquainted with the deceptively small menu.

After a quick run down of their menu, which is divided into sections, they have 4 main sandwiches: the Babylonian bite (Arabian), the Spartan spread (Greek), the Mayan Myth (Mexican) and the Ottoman (Turkish). They also have gyro plates, salads, sides, desserts and with the ‘build your own gyro empire’ – the options are actually endless.

We delved right in and started with one of my favorites from the night the Ottoman – soft doner bread filled with the most tender meat and coated in a smoky roasted eggplant sauce.

The Babylonian bite – arabic pita bread with more succulent meat (a mix of lamb and beef) mixed in a sesame tahini sauce and finished off with fresh vegetables and parsley.
My personal favorite was the Mayan myth – fluffy tortilla bread, creamy guacamole, chipolte salsa mixed with jalapeno spread. Sound delicious, tastes incredible – topped with the meat of your choice. Continue reading New restaurant alert: Go Gyroz

Food: Organic Foods and Cafe – Sheikh Zayed Road

The Organic Foods and Cafe located on Sheikh Zayed Road next to Oasis Center is huge. Since my mom loves shopping at their supermarket I was eager to try out their cafe.
What the cafe strives to do is make their food taste delicious while using organic produce and they’ve nailed it. I got to meet the culinary manager who told me about the brand and how it works and the chef who runs the operation behind the scenes. They have an in store bakery, butchery and fishery. Everything is made fresh daily from scratch. Another rarity is that the cafe is organic certified which is hard to find in the UAE. Continue reading Food: Organic Foods and Cafe – Sheikh Zayed Road

Food: Kitsch Counter

Last Thursday I was invited to an exclusive tasting of the new menu at Kitsch Counter (previously known as Kitsch Cupcakes). We sampled a lot of really good dishes:

The menu: kitsch kale salad (with pumpkin seeds), organic beetroot hummus on gluten free zucchini bread, sweet potato tartelettes, cauliflower flatbread with organic goats cheese, sustainable tuna salad, raw organic zucchini pasta, organic chia seeds with nuts and bee pollen, homemade jam (no sugar), natural peanut butter, sweet potato bake, lentil saladpaleo muffin, cold pressed juices and lots of cupcakes.   Continue reading Food: Kitsch Counter

Food: Sapori Di Bice

Rating: 4/5
What I loved: Melanzane ‘parmigiana’ , cavolo riccio and burrata pugliese pomodori secchi e origano fresco.

After my amazing visit last time, I decided to head here for lunch. The restaurant is gorgeous. This time we decided to sit in the corner (for the couch); the table was beautiful in it’s simplicity, the white and green combination. Sapori Di Bice is perfect for a romantic meal any time of the day. Continue reading Food: Sapori Di Bice

Food: Nando’s

I love Nando’s, I’ve been to Nando’s many times before and at one point of time it was a family staple. Recently Nando’s Al Qasba was renovated and since I had some free time on my hands I decided to check it out. I haven’t been to Qasba before but it’s beautiful (it’s like Marina for Sharjah).

Nando’s has outdoor seating which will be great in the winter; this branch is gorgeous with bright colours and an inviting look. When you walk in you’ll see the kitchen and a gazebo esque booth, tables with both chairs and sofas plus an elevated seating area, I opted for table 33 which was a table with sofas near a window.
