Earlier this week I was invited to a fantastic meetup at Benjarong in the Dusit Thani on Sheikh Zayed Road. Being one of the oldest hotels on SZR upholding Thai traditions neither does the Dusit Thani nor Benjarong disappoint.
Started off with an appetizer plate: marinated beef skewer (neua rue gai satay), deep fried vegetable spring rolls (por pia savoey), deep fried shrimp cake (tord mun goong) and chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves (gai haw bai toey). Although all of these were delicious, my favorite was the succulent chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves.
A special treat was live preparations of my favorite Thai salad (som tam) with different spice levels. I ended up with a medium spicy som tam drenched in a spicy lime dressing. #hungerpangs.
This spell of chilly weather calls for some soup and gaeng jued pak – a clear soup with mixed vegetables sure hit the spot.
Rich and creamy Thai green chicken curry (gaeng kiew wan), the crispy battered soft shell crab drenched in black pepper sauce (pu min phad prig thai dum) was the star of the night! Phad Thai was the last dish of the night (dessert doesn’t count XD ), stir fried noodles with prawn, tofu, bean sprouts and peanuts, topped with an egg casing.
Overall was a fantastic meetup with great company, fantastic food and some of the best (Thai) iced tea I’ve ever had. I can never leave Benjarong without their sticky rice with mango, I have had actual dreams of eating bucket loads of this gluttonous rice with the sweet and fresh Thai mango. #bliss
Can’t wait to head back here again!
