Food: El Chico

El Chico located on JBR was buzzing on a Thursday night. Rustic interiors, walls covered with authentic Mexican items and colorful lights guided us to sit inside (on a side note also made me want to go to Mexico). Pouring over the vast menu we were conflicted, we were thrilled with the helpful waitress’s recommendations.

We started off with top shelf guacamole which is made at your table. El Chico: the first who started the trend here in the UAE! Tasted fantastic, had the right amount of chunkiness. The nacho chips were fresh and went great with the spicy sweet salsa (my mom’s favorite).

For drinks: frozen margarita – really good went well with the meal, pina colada – fruity and sweet another item my mom loved, agua de sandia – tasted amazing in the beginning but later on tasted watered down due to the ice melting. I saved the best for last mexican flag – a mix of pina colada, margarita and strawberry daiquiri, a mix of sweet and sour, had hard competition but was declared the table favorite.

For mains I loved my fajita burrito, the succulent chicken, veggies and rice all wrapped in a soft tortilla and smothered in sour cream and cheese mmm, served with the freshest pico de gallo and sour cream.
The mexican sampler which contained: cheese and onion enchilada with chili con carne, chicken enchilada with sour cream, bean chalupa and beef taco served with rice and frijoles rancheras. As you can see a lot was sampled and everything was incredible, the enchiladas were flavorful, the bean chalupa and beef taco were gone in seconds and the sides were really good.
The veggie quesadillas were another hit, loved the sundried tomato tortilla, the veggies were sauteed and seasoned to perfection.
For a beef lover the grande brisket burritos should definitely be ordered. Slowly roasted beef brisket with queso, rice, onions, frijoles rancheras wrapped in a super soft tortilla and doused in sour cream and ranchera sauce, sound tempting? Because I’m drooling on my keyboard right now, plus it tastes just as good as it sounds if not better. Also did you look at those portion sizes: huge. We were pleasantly surprised!

We couldn’t leave without trying dessert and so the chocolate cake and mexican flan were ordered. The chocolate cake was sadly a let down: was dry and the pecans were non existent although it is big enough to share and the vanilla ice cream is excellent. I love flan and was super happy that it was delicious, soft and creamy while not being too sweet, a little small though.

El Chico is perfect for any occasion and is armed with great staff, recommended!
